Improve Your Google Search Results

February 17, 2016

SEO. SEO-Friendly. SEO Best Practices. People toss those words out frequently, but what do they mean? Put simply, good SEO allows people to find you easier. Think of your website as a brick-and-mortar store. Chances are customers wouldn’t stumble upon your store in the dark corner of a back alley. Sadly, without solid SEO behind your website, potential customers won’t be able to find your website either. These steps will help you figure out if your SEO is putting you on a sunny, traffic-friendly corridor or placing you in obscurity.

Fear no code!

The HTML of your website is nothing to fear. In most web browsers, all you need to do to see the coding is right click and select “View Page Source” or “Page Source.” For non-coders, it will look like a jumble of letters and characters, but even a cursory look can reveal a lot. In fact, you’ll quickly be able to see what’s really there for search engines to find.

What am I looking for?

Headings, paragraphs, titles and meta content tags—that’s the shortened version. Use a Find function to sift through the code, searching for “head,” “meta name,” “title,” “H1” (also “H2”, “H3,” “H4”), and hyperlink (“a href”). Next to these codes should be industry-specific keywords, hyperlinks and the text that appears on the front-end of your website. What you don’t want to see: Words like “SEO description” or “SEO Keywords.” Generally, if these fields are blank or lacking in any way, that’s an indication that while your website may look fine, it wasn’t coded well.

Let’s talk social

Metadata tags are exceptionally important for social sharing purposes. Modifying the metadata for blogs and images fine-tunes the sharing process. When someone shares your link, the automatically generated embed in the social media post will appear with the summary you created. When a user pins an image from your blog or e-commerce website, it pins with text that’s relevant to the hyperlink. Remember, the more people share your content, the more people will find your content because your website will be boosted in search results as search bots recognize your website’s popularity.
